I love to feed the birds!
And I don't like to throw away our Christmas tree right
after it is taken down.
When it is done decorating our home for the holidays
I put it outside with treats for the birds
in a place where I can watch it from the windows of our house.
The branches are alive with busy little
fluttering wings and beaks hungrily
sampling the tasty delights set before them
in the sheltering branches of the Christmas Tree!
This year, in addition to smaller 'ornaments'
I made a wreath, using a recycled plastic
food tray for the form. It worked wonderfully well
with the addition of a 'salsa' container for the
center hole.

A little chickadee feasting
at his new found feeder hanging on the gate!
(I wrapped bailing twine around the seed wreath
hoping it might help hold it together longer
and to give the little birds something to
grasp onto with their feet.)

Find the recipe for the wreath/ornaments and more pictures on my January 2009 post!
These are so fun to make with children.
It is a good lesson for them to learn about stewardship and caring for God's creations.
If you don't have a tree to hang the ornaments on, they look great strung on a cord under
the overhang of your house or shed, or even the clothesline!
(It is best if it is hung where the birds can eat safely out of the reach of cats.)
The little birds will enchant you for hours
with their antics and songs.

"The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field; which indeed is the least of all seeds; but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof."
Matthew 13:31 & 32

What a lovely Treat Tree! And wreath!
Sometimes I throw big suet cakes onto the roof...durn cats can jump 6 feet vertically easily...
Such a wonderful idea!
I like birds too...
What a sweet idea!
I use to decorate our old Christmas tree for the birds too...now we have a faux tree!
Our friends made us a couple of homemade suet cakes for Christmas - the birds loved them!
Blessings!

(PS - I like the background...very pretty!)
Dear Lady Farmer,
I see you have been redecorating, yet again! It looks very pretty :) .
I love how you used things around the house for your wreath, and it looks like Mr. Chickadee likes it, too!
Love,
Marqueta

What a great post, Raeann!!! Lovely treats! :)
What lovely ideas! I think that's so wonderful what you do with your Christmas tree ~ so pretty to watch it "live on" with those sweet little birds in it! :)
How well cared for the birds are on your property...they really are spoiled!
Have a blessed day!

What a great idea. I usually go buy the suet cakes, but I like this better. I have put it high from my cat too.
The bird here received a feast today. I was going to fill the feed and a half bag of feed rip. Well, you know what happened? They got all of it, not much in the feeder though, LOL :) Now I had to put the cat on the porch for awhile.
Have a blessed day.
This such a great idea. I remember your Jan 2009 post and thought I would give it a try. Maybe I can do it this year!
:) ldh

What wonderful ideas, we have so much fun feeding the birds around here, I am so thankful that God made them, for us. Ours bring us so much enjoyment.
And as always the scripture you share is perfect.
I love your new blog look, so refreshing, I have been working on mine but it just isn't exactly what I want.
I think it is a little to gawdy. LOL
Blessings,
Sue
We are bird watchers too! We have a bird bath and three feeders - I'll have to make some wreaths.
What I'm hoping to attract is whatever bugs eat Japanese beetles!
